Global Organic Textile Standard

The world's most recognised organisation for certifying organic textiles

Established in 2002, the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) is one of the most well recognised certifications for natural fibres. It ensures that textiles are produced and treated organically throughout the entire value chain: From the harvesting of the raw materials, through environmentally and socially responsible manufacturing up to labelling and chemical free colouring. All suppliers in the value chain are visited by inspectors on a regular basis. This provides a credible assurance to the consumer that the product is 100% organic.

A company participating in the GOTS certification scheme must work in compliance with all criteria of the standard. That means that every GOTS certified product fulfills the same standards.

GOTS’s Standards

  • No child or forced labour
  • Working conditions are safe and hygienic
  • Employees are paid living wages
  • Workers must be allowed free association and have the right to collective bargaining
  • GOTS ‘organic’ products must contain at least 95% certified organic fibres
  • GOTS ‘made with organic’ products must contain at least 70% certified organic fibres
  • Prohibition of toxic inputs, like heavy metals, formaldehyde, chlorine bleach, and genetically modified organisms
  • All chemical inputs must meet basic requirements for biodegradability/eliminability
  • Operators must have environmental policies with procedures to minimise waste and discharges
